Question: Why am I getting an error that says "At least 8 MB of available video memory is required" when launching Red Faction?

Answer: This error occurs when Red Faction is launched on a system with 2GiB or more available video memory.
At a technical level, the issue is caused by a signed DWORD being read as less than the minimum of 5MiB. This is resolved with the replacement of a signed less than comparision with an unsigned less than comparison.

Solution: Download and install the [Pure Faction] patch, which resolves all known issues with Red Faction, fixes numerous security holes, and provides many additional features. Once you install Pure Faction, launch PFLauncher.exe to play the game with the patch.

For directions on how to install Pure Faction, please see [Pure Faction installation instructions].

Pure Faction Installation Instructions

The custom add-on Pure Faction fixes ALL known problems with Red Faction 1, and also provides anti-cheat, automatic map downloader, and many other great features. It fixes numerous security holes and fixes bugs. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you play Red Faction using Pure Faction.

If you run into any issues installing or using Pure Faction, join the Faction Files Discord community and someone will help you.

Installing Pure Faction on a Steam copy of Red Faction

1. Download Pure Faction from this website.
2. Run the installer. When the installer asks for your Red Faction directory, you must give it your Steam Red Faction directory. The default Steam Red Faction directory is C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\red faction\

NOTE: You must launch Pure Faction via PF.exe or the Pure Faction launcher (PFLauncher.exe). The Steam overlay will currently not work. (A "Pure Faction" shortcut will be placed in the Start Menu)
NOTE: If you still have some issues after installing and while using Pure Faction, you may have to set PF.exe to run in Windows 98 Compatibility mode.

Installing Pure Faction on a non-Steam copy of Red Faction

1. Download Pure Faction from this website.
2. Run the installer. When the installer asks for your Red Faction directory, you must give it your Red Faction directory. The default Red Faction directory is C:\games\RedFaction\

NOTE: You must launch Pure Faction via PF.exe or the Pure Faction launcher (PFLauncher.exe). (A "Pure Faction" shortcut will be placed in the Start Menu)
NOTE: If you still have some issues after installing and while using Pure Faction, you may have to set PF.exe to run in Windows 98 Compatibility mode.

Question: Why does the submarine explode when it hits the water in the Red Faction single player campaign?

Answer: This error occurs when the game is running with high FPS (Frames per Second), as will almost always occur when running Red Faction on a newer computer.

Solution: To resolve this issue, you will need to force the game to run at lower FPS than it normally would on your computer, which is only possible when using the [Pure Faction] patch.

Download and install the [Pure Faction] patch, which resolves all known issues with Red Faction, fixes numerous security holes, and provides many additional features. Once you install Pure Faction, launch PFLauncher.exe to play the game with the patch.

For directions on how to install Pure Faction, please see [Pure Faction installation instructions].

When you are at the sub bay part of the campaign, type "r_maxfps 30" in your console (press ` to go into console): and hit enter. Once you have done this, press the button to drop the submarine into the water. Once the submarine is fully submerged, type "r_maxfps 150" in your console and press enter.

Question: Why is the audio from certain vehicles or robots obnoxiously loud, OR why do some in-game sounds occasionally cut in or out?

Answer: Red Faction doesn't correctly handle scaling sounds when you move the "Sound Effects" slider in the options menu, resulting in some sounds being very loud and/or cutting in and out based on your proximity to their source. The problem isn't known to occur with music or message volume.

Solution: If you're running Windows Vista, 7, 2008, 2008 R2, 8, 2012, 8.1, 10, or 2016, it is recommended to set the in-game Red Faction "Sound Effects" volume (in the Options->Audio panel) to 100%, then use the Windows volume mixer to scale the game's audio to the desired level.

Many websites offer instructions on accessing and using the Windows volume mixer. As an example, [How to Geek].
