Hello people,

I started mapping again (can't seem to stop doing so) but i have forgotten some things.
I want to create Darkness and i know (did it before) that it can be done with settings of a normal light entity, but as i have been trying, i can't get it to work anymore. :$

I once downloaded a map that had shadows in it (was a test map for just that) but i no longer have it, and i wouldn't know where to download it again since our hardcore source (L4Y) is no longer available.

Is there anybody here who has knowledge on how to get this done and willing to share that information!?
What settings do i have to give a light entity to make it give shadow, in stead of light?

Kind regards,

-Pan

I've done it, but it's a pain in the ass and you really can't do it properly. I've totally forgotten how I did it. I'll bug Goober to post because I'm sure he remembers.

Thanks for the replie, okay that would be nice. It's only for a small piece of the map, since i remember somebody telling me it was eating performance when used on a large scale.
Lets hope Goober remembers.

Edit:

Still no post from Goober, anybody else knows how to do it? If not, i guess i can always use a shadow texture, tho the effect is not the same.

You can give a negative intensity, but no matter how hard you try - RED will never export flat black (0,0,0) in a lightmap. The only real way to do that is to use flat black textures (either as a polygon texture or a decal).

Yeah i will go for the texture, thanks for replying tho!

PS The negative intensity did not work for me. I guess i messed up other settings then. I thought "Dynamic" and "Shadow casting" needed to be enabled but all i got, even with a negative value was a very bright light!

Dynamic won't show in-game on geometry - only meshes. (clutter, players, pickups etc.)

like Goober said, Redfaction wont do 0,0,0 in a lightmap, so the only way to go is to use black textures

I use layers of different opacitys of black, or make custom shadows and or lights.

__________ 50% opacity is where it is completely black in Redfaction, so theirs no need to go past that to a 100%
....
__________ 20%
__________ 15%
__________ 10%
__________ 5%

This is how far ive gotten with it.
(In game I turn the gamma brightness down, my screen brightness down, and then I turn contrast up.)
it looks really good with those settings, but i cant get a screenshot of that unless i literally take a picture of my screen

so at the top of the picture is where the layering is :D it fades... to black

Hope this helps

Thanks for your reaction, i already figured using textures was the way to go, though, i also noticed after Goober's post, i was messing shit up as usual! The light using a negative value does work, i was going at it way to complicated, which had the result i posted in the previous reply! Just setting the value negative does the trick, but messing with other settings like dynamic and what not sort of messes it up!

Anyway, stopped building due to OS switch (back to Win XP since Win 7 was a bit heavy on my system, still got some old crap compared to today's PC's) But i will finish it with shadow textures once i got all that stuff installed again.

Thanks for reacting guys, Problem solved!

"negative" ' wait seriosly!!!! ohhhhh NICEEE '

But it still doesn't do perfect black, so it will only show in lighted areas which is still amazing.

I wish I had found this out much earlier, I did find out a bunch of other stuff by putting negatives in the events values :)
