Alpine Faction is an actively developed, free, and open source patch/modification for the 2001 FPS game Red Faction. It's not a source port, but its goals and features are similar to what you might expect from one. Alpine Faction is a fork of and uses Rafalh's incredible Dash Faction project as its foundation.

Alpine Faction endevours to fix bugs and resolve security vulnerabilities in the stock game, improve compatibility with modern systems, restore cut content, enhance engine performance and graphical quality, and modernize your experience by adding features that are expected in modern games.

Alpine Faction provides players, mappers, mod developers, and server operators with the tools to truly realize what their experience with this fantastic game can be.

Notable improvements in Alpine Faction minor version v1.2.1 are:
* Gibbing from explosive damage is now supported in multiplayer
* Anti-aliasing, rotating skyboxes, IR scanners, and lighting for third person weapon models now supported in Direct3D 11
* Many other Direct3D 11 renderer fixes and improvements (should now be a better experience than D3D9 in most cases)
* Improved scoreboard display with spectators and browsers split out
* Improved FPS display
* Configurable scale and color values for damage notifications, player labels, and reticles
* Free look spectator persists between level loads
* Full bright faces interact correctly with GeoMod now
* Fixes for various other stability and functionality issues

Major new features in Alpine Faction v1.2.0 (Willow) are:
* New multiplayer gametypes:
- King of the Hill (KOTH)
- Damage Control (DC)
- Revolt (REV)
- Escalation (ESC)
- Run (RUN)
* Improved scoreboard with client status icons
* Many new level editor capabilities for mod developers
* Enhanced Direct3D 11 support
* Servers can run multiple gametypes in the same rotation and customize gameplay rules per-level
* Scroll wheel support for lists in the menus
* TOML-based configuration for dedicated servers

The comments may not apply to the newest version. Fixes most glitches in Red Faction and allows for a way smoother experience on modern PCs. You definitely need to get this if you want to play the game nowadays, plus, you can connect your FF Account to this for achievements (even though they don't do anything, it's still neat). Also mandatory for Multiplayer
