Question: Why am I getting an error when launching Red Faction II prompting me to insert Red Faction II disc 1 into my CD ROM drive?

Answer: The specific cause of this issue is currently unknown.

Solution: If Red Faction II gives you an error about putting the disc in your drive, simply REMOVE any discs currently in your CD-ROM drive. You should also UNMOUNT any virtual drives you may be using, through programs such as PowerISO, MagicDisc, etc.

If you in fact do not have any CD-ROM drive at all, some users have stated that using a virtual CD drive program and creating an empty drive can fix the problem. (PowerISO, MagicDisc, etc.)

Question: Why am I getting a "Missing Features" error that says "At least 8 MB of available video memory is required" when launching Red Faction II?

Answer: This error occurs when Red Faction II is launched on a system with 2GiB or more available video memory.
At a technical level, the issue is caused by a signed DWORD being read as less than the minimum of 5MiB. This is resolved with the replacement of a signed less than comparision with an unsigned less than comparison.

Solution: Patches are available for Red Faction II to fix this bug. Installation details are below. Please ensure you follow the Steam instructions if you have a Steam copy, and the non-Steam instructions if you have a non-Steam copy. The solutions are not the same and the bug will not be fixed if you follow the wrong set of instructions.

NOTE: There have been some suggestions that to fix this issue, you need to limit your system memory to 2GB in "msconfig". While that would probably also resolve the issue, it's obviously extremely tedious to make that change every time you want to play RFII, then undo the change when you're done. With the patches listed in this post, there is no need to limit your system memory to 2GB.
