So, I've had this idea for quite a while now but...

I'm not really sure how many people would chip in on this, why wouldn't we all cash in a bit and let some CE3/UE4 "pro" create the most popular maps of RF1 again? Say, WL, CM, AOW etc. (Don't know much maps from DM - never played them, sorry)

I actually even contacted Nordic Games earlier this year (2015) about this and they basically said it would be fine if we didn't cash in on it. Like, say, a free "stand-alone mod".

Anyway, have a great new year guys! *And let me know what you think*

Hey, here's Vodka talking...
There's already been a great Unreal Tournament mod, Mars Wars.
I would certainly pay for a modern remake of RF, if it stays true to the original.
But how about implementing destruction (GeoMod) which is not supported by most big game engines out of the box?
Otherwise, the gameplay won't be the same, and we'll get another generic sci-fi shooter.
btw, UE4 >>> CE3, both in terms of tools usability and source code quality.

And yes, Happy New Year to all of your! Keep up the good work!
Поздравляю всех с Новым Годом, желаю вам здоровья, денег, тёлок побольше и нагнуть мир раком (in a good way)! (<< you must know Russian in order to understand this, it defies straightforward translation.)
Einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr! Lang lebe, mein Lieblingsvideospiel!
(Wie schade dass bei der Rally zu wenige Personen anwesend waren.)

Porting the maps is fairly easy. Porting RF's gameplay is... something else entirely

Mars Wars is cool but is definitely not an RF clone (although maybe the authors didn't intend it to be an exact clone). It does have an interesting feel and I must say I had fun playing it, but there is nobody else to play it with :p

Unfortunately I don't think a game like RF would have any mainstream appeal these days. Same goes for a lot of 90s-early 2000s FPS games. The FPS landscape has changed. I've heard a lot of times people wishing Nordic would make a new game like RF1. It would be cool for us but probably a bad business decision unfortunately

Checkmate had some popularity in the UT instagib scene. I'm sure it will show up in UT4 or something eventually.

Warlords and the other CTF maps don't work too well in other games. To get them playable you'd have to alter a lot of their basic layouts. And there are no DM maps worth porting. RF style DM maps don't work in other games because of the differences in the armor systems. Maybe DM10 would be ok with some heavy editing but that's about it.

I'd probably enjoy an RF remake/clone but I'd never pay for it. Remaking RF would be misguided. What'd be nice is the development of a modern high skill ceiling FPS game.

Currently, few are even trying (maybe 2gd... lol). Every multiplayer FPS since ET has been rancid turbogarbage. I can't imagine this trend changing in the near future (especially if VR ever gets good enough to warrant attention). I hope I'm wrong but I'm not waiting around anymore.

That's just how it is. If it's challenge you're after in games try out a VSRG, tetris or something. There are also fighting games but as far as I know the EU scene for them is pretty tiny.

Yeah, I totally forgot that all the pre-made engines don't have enough destruction capabilities built in.

As for appeal, I don't know. Surely it would be maybe ~100 people max. (Maybe more with a tad of advertising?) But I don't know, for some reason this game is nostalgic for me. Maybe because I've made a few very good real life friends from it and that's keeping me "tied" to the game and want to see something new to be done with the first part? I mean, I don't hate Guerilla and after but they are absolutely nothing for me compared to the first one.

Any actual skill based games (nick)? All I know right now is Squad and even that's still in Early access and has nothing to do with RF style gameplay. There's the new UT but that also doesn't have much to go for it.

Didn't actually think people would even think about it but seems a few do, that's glad to see already.

Checkmate was modified, and then there were modified versions of the already modified map. Furthermore, this was mostly popular in pubs, the better, more competitive players realised that you could simply stand in an arena map like DM-Gael and achieve the desired effect i.e. to measure someone's shock aim.

It is going back many years since I played a UT eurocup in instagib but from what I remember, checkmate wasn't a part of the map pool.

It is possible the newer UT game and community might feel otherwise but with players like daddy and other low-mid skills being considered "pro", I can't help but feel that even if some god were to cast a miraculous tidal wave of cleansing to rid the game of bugs and bullshit, the game is likely to end with the same fate; it is beyond doomed.

I've had similar ideas to port this game to another engine, and I still have a tiny bit of sway with some competitive teams but the community from PF would fail to group up sheep already in a pen. If you aren't going to include said sheep, you might as well make a better game to begin with.

Porting a game, coding, making maps, making artwork, genuinely is easy as hell to do. It's short sighted. The problem is making the game popular once you've done that. If people want this game to be ported over, they need marketing and connections. For marketing, streaming works but you need skill aka guess who? For connections, you need the same people. My point is that nick, digi and I are your only hope for this idea, and the community bit our hand as we tried to feed them

I'm not saying it is what you are looking for (and the PC community is apparently dead these days), but have you played Titanfall? What did you think of it?

As far as recent FPS games go it was probably the most fun in a FPS I've had online since the original RF.

I thoroughly enjoyed it although admit it has several short comings, but I feel it bucked the trend of "Generic shooter is generic".

I haven't tried it. When it came out I waited to see if anyone I game with would get it and nobody did. I don't think it's my jam.

It had some funky movement mechanics right? And some kind of aimbot pistol.
