Unlike Intharth, I managed to watch my step. Well, mostly. My luck came to an abrupt end when some maniac with a rocket launcher decided that the cement platform I was standing on would look better with a rather substantial hole in it.

To this day, I have no idea what's holding this structure up. I can only assume Martian civil engineers are working with technology we haven't quite caught up with back on Earth. The locals also seem to have a rather peculiar sense of humour: on my way down, I caught sight of a taunting message spray-painted on the underside of the platform.

I'm not sure whether to be impressed by the foresight or concerned that someone took the time to paint it there in the first place. The whole structure has a certain Arecibo Observatory quality to it, though I suspect this one has a somewhat less optimistic maintenance schedule. Either way, it's a long way down.
