Hi everyone, just thought I'd make a short post detailing why the site has been down for the past ~24 hours as well as a few other things myself and digi have been discussing for a while.
Part 1: The Red Faction 1 global statistics page is back up. It can be found here: [Link]
Part 2: We had complications getting the funds aligned to pay for the factionfiles.com domain, so the site was down briefly while we sorted out the payment. This was why if you went to the site within that ~24 hour period, you'd have been presented with GoDaddy's "Domain has expired!" page. Either way, we're all set now for the next few years, so we shouldn't have that problem again.
Part 3: As digi and I no longer play Red Faction (or have much interest in it for that matter), we have little desire to put any more of our own money into the site. This is why you may have noticed donation buttons appearing on the site. Donations are not required to use the forums, download files or use the PF autodownloader, but would be much appreciated. Myself and digi have both poured countless hours and dollars into Faction Files and other Red Faction related projects for the community and until now have asked for nothing in return.
In short: Donations would be appreciated. If we do not receive donations within a few months that at the very least cover the cost of domain renewal, Faction Files will most likely be taken down. Yes, this includes the PF map autodownloader and other projects. We're not asking for a lot here people, just the small costs associated with running forums and other services which are not for us, but for you.
We're more than happy to continue to provide these services for the Red Faction community, even if we are no longer an active part of it - but we're honestly tired of doing it on our own dime.
Part 4: As digi already outlined here, there are some major forum changes coming to Faction Files. In making these changes, our desire is to consolidate forums, not remove them. We've been discussing doing this for quite some time, and now we're at a point where we feel that it makes sense to have less forum sections.
Of course as always, we're open to suggestions from everyone.
